So, I drop off the radar for a while. Try and live normally for a bit. Do some study, try to get my tanking grades up to par. Look after Black, keep trying to write his story. Continue trying to get Rinforzando to cooperate.
And then I check my P.O. Box, and find a certain package. With a certain name on it, and a handwritten note with condolences of Jack. Which can only mean one thing: I've won the bet, and Carter is dead.
I have his notes here in front of me. Meticulously organized. Engineer's handwriting. His i's look like j's. Diagrams done in neat pencil. I pore through them, and I see both similarities to my own work, and things I'd never even have thought of in a million years, and I wonder what would have happened if we could have worked together, trading notes instead of hoarding them in this game. But then, he always was secretive. There is a very obvious gap where my file should be.
He was one of the two I considered candidates for the Sage title, you know. But then bad things historically have happened when a Sage gives titles to people other than their successor. He was also the first person I really met here.
I find I still can't think of him as truly dead. Can't help but catch myself thinking this is a deliberate ruse, or an accidental mistake. That'll pass, probably.
Kendra's gone too, but there's still a little hope for her, if Chaos can be taken off the pills. Rose has offered to send me a sample of some, and I've taken her up on it. Lily's past the point of no return. Morningstar and Redlight are, as we all know, still out and about, with Redling sightings in my territory.
...
I'm accelerating my program, and will be starting on human trials shortly. Thanks to the rats I now have rat antibodies to azoth. I also still have some human antibodies to same from Carter left, but I'm reluctant to use those as they cannot be replaced. I also have some secondary rat antibodies; that is rat antibodies with human azoth antibodies as their target. These will be fluorescently tagged and used for identification purposes later.
For now, I will be injecting the primary rat antibodies into myself to determine their effect. Black does not have any azoth left in him and so is not a suitable candidate, and I've learnt the drawbacks of having a catch and release program; the local proxies involved tend to learn from their mistakes, those mistakes being springing one of my traps. They have started to leave disparaging notes. I have not been able to obtain any for this experiment.
But maybe that's for the best. This is uncharted territory, and I don't want any incorrect production or unforeseen side effects on my part to result in any death or injury other than possibly my own. It's why I've yet to use the Cortexiphan I've stockpiled.
Wish me luck. I'll periodically update this post throughout the process.
EDIT: Roughly two hours after the injection, and the area around my inner arm is red and inflamed. Starting to not feel well, like my head's been stuffed with cotton wool. Very thirsty all of a sudden.
EDIT: tried to get some things. Stood up too fast. Didn't manage to get the bucket. there's black everywhere. It's too hot. Head's killing me.

Jack
A man in a long coat wearing fingerless gloves.
I drew him up a plastic seat on one side of a metal operating table, the best I could do under these circumstances. Honestly, I was not expecting to see him here, exactly, and said so.
Meeting him was an... experience. He can be infuriating like no one else, and has a particular fondness for half answers. After a while I became sure he was simply needling at my curiosity for the fun of it, so I kept on calling him 'fairy boy'.
After the exchange of pleasantries we got down to business, negotiating and haggling back and forth. Anything I could give was theoretically on the table, up to, and including, my life. I'm not sure how long this went on: it could have been hours but it felt like days, and scraps of balled up paper began to surround the table. Eventually I carefully went through the written contract for the last time, methodically locating and excising any remaining ambiguities of language I could find; I'm aware the bargain needn't have taken this form but I was determined to do this properly.
"Let's do this one last time," I said, picking it up. "If the terms of this contract are breached by one of its signing individuals, full and permanent ownership of all items of collateral is to be transferred to the nonbreaching signing individual."
"Yes." The grin hadn't left his face this entire time.
"If the first recipient dies or rejects the bought protection either verbally or in writing, that protection is removed from them. If the second recipient voluntarily disbands by majority vote or there are no longer any living members, that protection is removed from them. If both recipients meet one or more of their respective conditions written above, the contract is then considered inactive and the items of collateral will be returned to their rightful owners. If I, the buyer, should die, then protection is removed from both recipients regardless of their condition and the items of collateral transfer into your full and permanent ownership, with the exception of if my death is a direct or indirect result of any attempts or plans on your part to bring about my death while this contract is active. These attempts or plans will then be considered a breach of contract, with the aforementioned results."
"Yes." If anything, it had gotten wider.
There were other clauses. Precise definitions of the terms used, closing of loopholes, certain specialised confidentiality agreements. Finally, we both signed on the dotted lines. I gave him the original and kept the carbon copy. He was more amused by it then anything else. We shook hands.
"Thank you for your time," he said cheerfully. "I haven't had this much fun in years."
And then he left, and I wondered if perhaps I'd made the wrong decision.
In other news, I no longer have an eye.

Experiment 3: Capture Aftermath
Sorry for the false alarm. Things have been occupying my attention and to tell you the truth I forgot I'd made it and so didn't cancel it. I'm leaving it up as however embarrasing it is it does describe the nature of the experiment. Speaking of, I should let you know what happened now that I can actually type.
The hardest part turned out be
getting him to actually be within the range of the machine, and although he was
sometimes picked up by the cameras it took several attempts over three days to
get him into position. In the end I threw caution and scientific reason to the
winds and used Setoth’s summoning circle, drawing it in the earth and muttering
the words from the roof and feeling incredibly silly the entire time.
When he was in range I flicked the switch. Not long after
there was the most horrible noise, like a spike being driven into your head
through your ears. I’m still not entirely sure it wasn’t in my head, since it
by rights should have alerted anyone within several blocks. It stopped after a
few seconds and I unscrewed my eyes and cautiously looked above the parapet.
What I saw was a giddying sight. It was him, of course,
and his form was struggling to maintain cohesion; it was all a mass of black
writhing tentacles that melted and reformed from each other. It looked like
he’d tried to smash the machine, since several of them were stuck in place as
every metallic particle in them was being whipped back and forth at fifty
hertz.
It was great material for a one liner, but all I heard
was someone laughing and it took a few seconds to realize it was me. Oh, it was
amazing, the heady feeling of turning the tables, of finally having power over it, instead of the other way around. It
couldn’t last, and it didn’t.
In that mass of black that white face turned from the
machine and looked up at me. And then a bevy of tentacles lashed out and sliced
through a nearby tree, which fell on the machine with a crunch. The part of me that wasn’t completely freaking out now was
celebrating the fact that I’d forced him to use an unorthodox tactic, but that
too joined the rest when he rose up in front of me and the laughter died to a
gurgle.
I’ve mentioned an ‘emoticon aura’ before. He seems to
broadcast it in lieu of facial expressions, and from what I’ve read it mainly
comes in four settings: Observation, Condescending Affection, Bafflement and I
WILL MURDER YOU AND EVERYTHING YOU HOLD DEAR. Guess which one was practically
flattening me to the ground in fear. I knew, right then and there, that I was
dead. Well, I thought, that’s a relief. Then I was smacked
against the concrete of the other side of the roof so hard I swear I heard my
skull crack.
It didn’t stop there. He continued to smack me around
with tentacles that burnt to the touch again and again and again and again and again and again again again. It wasn’t entirely
physical, either. The sheer force of the anger
radiating out from him felt like being crushed under a ten ton weight while
someone sawed through your brain with static shaped barbed wire. I was on my
knees, shaking and coughing blood. I was still lucid enough, barely, to reach
into my right pocket and activate the recording of the banishing words I’d made
beforehand. It didn’t help. I was lifted up by the front of my shirt and then dropped
onto the ground, and there was a crack as my weight fell on the iPhone and the
recording abruptly stopped. Shards of the screen embedded themselves into my
side and drew blood.
Up until this point I’d been pretty much a limp doll. It
hurt to breathe, moving was out of
the question. My mind snapped into focus again, just as it did in the
warehouse, and suddenly it was as if someone had flicked the off switch on the
world. Again, I didn’t feel anything from him; the sense of primal anger cut
off abruptly. The only sources of pain now were my injuries and the tentacles restricting my
movement. I snarled and bit the nearest one I could reach.
Well, that was another bad idea in an increasingly long
list of them. He tasted awful, of
wood alcohol and bitter tannins, with a large dose of rotting offal and a dash
of jet fuel. I spat immediately and involuntarily, and started trying to
scratch him instead. My nails needless to say, did nothing.
I scrabbled and struggled like a mad thing, and I
think this might have confused him a little because he paused for a second,
before wrapping a tentacle around my throat.
This… state of mind may have been an advantage of sorts
in the warehouse, but it was most certainly was not here, with an opponent that
couldn’t be hurt or defended against by direct means. I’m not the most cautious
of individuals but in this state I am stupid.
That's the only reason I can think of for why I didn't use the taser I had in my other pocket until this point. I stabbed the nearest bit of him I could reach with it, and everything went black.
Now seeing as I am alive, as evidenced by my writing this
to you, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume I was teleported somewhere again.
You’d be right. I was teleported to a highway. Where I was almost immediately
run over.
I woke up again in a hospital. Thankfully, the person
who’d hit me was horrified and had called 111. My cousin rushed down as soon as
he heard the news, and so I’m glad my vocal cords are absolutely shot, since I
had an excuse to not talk to him. I’m told they’ll heal… mostly, but for now I
can’t say a word. On the other hand, he told me news and left the laptop and the
bag of grapes I’m sure he only bought because that’s the thing you do in movies
and told me he’d get to the bottom of who did this. My pitiful neckbracy
attempt at a vehemently shaken head just doesn’t have the same impact as a loud
‘no’, I found. He left before I could stop him.
Speaking of the injury tally: I was right, my skull is
cracked. My brain had minor internal bleeding. Might have something to do with
the fact that everything seems to echo right now, whispers on the edge of
hearing. I have cracked ribs. I have whiplash. The screen shards had to be
removed. My mouth feels like I’ve been gargling battery acid. My left arm and
leg are broken, making it a pain to type let me tell you. There are bad burns
all over my body that have distinctly baffled the hospital staff with regards
to their possible origin. I played the ‘cracked skull unconciousness’ card when
they asked. Not to mention bruises everywhere and apparently self inflicted
muscle damage. All in all, I’m incredibly lucky to be alive. I’m told the fact
that I wasn’t expecting the impact with the car may have saved my life.
So I will be in traction for a while. Since my iPhone’s
smashed I can’t monitor my camera feeds. Nor can I try and see if the machine
is still salvageable. (It most likely isn’t.) But I
can still work on the data I’ve saved to the laptop, and I can still read blogs
(go hospital wifi!), so I’ll go do that now.

Experiment 3: Capture
Music!
For your viewing pleasure, I'd like you to read this post in the tone of voice someone selling a giant robot uses just before it steps on them.
From today I will be testing my… well, I hesitate to call
it an invention. It borrows heavily from existing devices. But none of them
were modified for the purpose I intend to use this for; a way of capturing
Slenderman.
Ambitious, I know! And very likely to result in my
turning into a bloody smear.
I recommended Dead Man’s Posts to Carter, and I’ve set up
a separate one in case this all goes south. Since I don’t want to reveal my
plans before they’re executed in case of proxy sabotage, my method and
reasoning will be revealed either by it in a week or me if all goes something
approximating well.
Today, I activate the project. Wish me luck.

Vandalism: Round 1
You may have deduced from my very first post that I'm an idiot. This particular instance of idiocy stands out above the usual, however. I met the local Proxies for the first time today yesterday, and things... did not go well.
I don’t own a car. Biking is my only method of
transportation. I was cycling to the University when a flicker of white in the corner of my vision caught my eye. I
turned my head to follow it and very nearly crashed into a lamp post. I skidded
to a stop, and frantically looked back and forth for whatever it was.
Surprisingly, it was not a tall dark faceless man.
It was an operator symbol on the side of a shuttered
warehouse, drawn in white chalk, and when I saw it absolutely everything
rational in my head jumped ship. I walked, well, ran my bike towards it.
I hadn’t spent more than two seconds examining it when
something cold and hard poked the back of my skull. Well, it could have been a
spanner, but with every movie I’d ever watched in the back of my mind I kept
very, very still.
"I told you this would work."
Male, smug, directly behind me. There was a grumble and
the brief rustle of money changing hands, and then my arm was jammed up my back
in quite a painful manner. I was pushed forward into the warehouse, and the
door shut and clicked locked.
The only source of light was the grimy windows and the
sunlight hitting a phenomenal amount of dust. I sneezed. Have you ever tried to
sneeze while trying not to move? It’s nigh on impossible. I licked my lips, which were suddenly very dry.
“I know you can’t kill me, so what do you want?”
“You don’t sound very sure,” said the mentally dubbed Smugface,
living up to his name. “Face the wall. Put your hands on it.”
I complied. “You’re Proxies, right? Your Boss isn’t done
with me yet. I don’t think he’d be happy if I died before I was good and
broken.”
"You're right." The gun moved away, and I sighed in relief. "Nice guess. Well done."
I started to turn around, and was shoved back into the
wall, cold concrete making great friends with the side of my face. “Of course,”
he continued conversationally, “just because we can’t kill you yet doesn’t mean
we can’t beat you up a little bit.”
And then I was hit with a steel pipe. Not as heavy as the
stereotypical lead, but my ribs still hated me. So did my back, and then my
head. Whoever did it knew their stuff; no blood drawn,
no bones broken, no unconsciousness allowed. I collapsed at some point, I think. My mind was slowly shutting down everything that wasn’t about blocking the
pain, bit by bit. I was kicked over, and then they delivered a hit that left me
seeing nothing but spinning black and yellow triangles.
Through the constant ringing whine I could hear
Smugdouche laugh from to the left. “Hey, Bailey, how about leaving some for
me.” I don’t know if
‘Bailey’ replied. I think I tried to
move a little, maybe to crawl away. I got about as far as getting to my knees
before a strike to the midsection utterly winded me and knocked me back on my
side. That jacked up the pain a few notches. In my head a light went off, a
switch was flipped, and everything snaps into utter clarity.
I'm... not proud of what happened next. A little explanation is perhaps in order. When I was a kid, my cousin and I used to roughhouse a lot. We
always had to be careful about going too far, not because of any injury that
could happen, but because when in sufficient pain one or the other of us would
go berserk.
When that happened, the only thing to do was run, get
into a room with a working lock, lean all your weight against the door, and
wait until they calmed down. If you stuck around, if you thought you could talk
to them or fight back, then you would quickly learn what it was like to fight
someone who was no longer playing by any sorts of rules, who was trying to
cause as much injury to your person as possible and to whom pain made no
difference in their attempt to do this. I know my cousin was bloody terrifying
like that.
In any case, as Bailey was leaning back for another swing, I grabbed
his leg with all my limbs like a kid who doesn’t want to go to bed. His
surprise lasted for a fraction of a second before he tried to kick me off, but
I hung on like a bulldog and bit into the back of his leg, hard enough to taste
blood. Keeping the pressure on, I sawed my lower jaw back and forth, chewing
into the flesh as he rained blows onto my head with the pipe. He was no longer
holding back, but the angle was awkward, and all it elicited was a muffled
growl between the gnawing and the occasional starbursts of colour and static that
filled my vision whenever he got a good hit.
Smugface, of course, was ignoring his buddy’s shouts and
sounded like he was trying not to collapse from laughter. There was probably
talking happening, or at least yelling on one side and snickering on the other,
but as far as I was concerned at the time it might as well have been Esperanto.
Now the Achilles tendon is under a great amount of
tension. When it snaps, it’s like a piano wire being cut. Bailey gave a howl as
the previously taut muscle disappeared towards his right knee. I let go of his
leg as he fell like a tree, wiped my stinging mouth with the back of my arm,
spat blood on the concrete floor, and then pounced on him, all forty five
kilograms of my weight going through my knees into his gut. Then I punched him
in the throat. Then I started industrially trying to claw his eyeballs out. No,
I don’t know why either.
Well, he’s a Proxy. Even winded, wheezing, blinded by
blood, in intense pain from a leg that had just had the equivalent of a wound
spring smash everything up in it, in a disadvantageous position and with nasty
gashes in his face, he was capable of defending himself. If he’d had any kind
of martial training he would have beaten me hands down, sudden attack of
insanity or no. He grabbed my wrists and started pushing me up off him. I
drummed my knees on his stomach and spat in his wounds, to little more than a
grunt. So I went back to my weapon of choice; my teeth sank into one of his wrists and didn’t stop. He was now
bleeding quite badly. Involuntarily, his grip in that hand weakened; not enough
for me to wrench it away, but enough for me to be able to close in to headbutt
him. Hard. His nose made a satisfying crunching sound. I bit the jagged remains
of it and twisted, grinding my teeth.
His instinctive reaction was for his hands to fly to his face. Not smart, but
he probably wasn’t thinking very coherently by this point anyway. I took the
opportunity to make a grab for the abandoned pipe. It wasn’t there.
I found out where it was when I was smacked off him by
Smugface. I rolled some distance away and rose to a runner’s crouch, hissing.
Smugface tossed the pipe to his off hand and drew his gun, pointing it straight
at me.
I wasn’t intimidated in the slightest. That isn’t a
boast, it’s a downright concern. In the fucked up state my mind was in there
was nothing but feeling pain, and inflicting pain. There was no fear, and
I don’t think I could even comprehend the idea of death. The gun was just an L
shaped piece of metal to me.
We faced off over the groaning, slowly moving body of his
friend. He was yelling something now. The words went straight over my head but I understood the tone. Back off.
Back down.
I screamed at him. This was nothing like a scream of
fear. It was the sound someone makes when they want to burst eardrums. It had
murderous intent in it. I hunched my shoulders, stared straight into his eyes, and
took a deliberate, defiant step forward. I didn’t need to bare my teeth. My
face had been locked in a bloodstained rictus grin the entire time. I was doing
the equivalent of a cat fluffing its fur to make itself bigger, because that’s
what I thought he was doing, and I
was assured I could call his bluff.
…yeah. If he hadn’t been told not to kill me, I wouldn’t
be alive right now.
He stood his ground, returning my gaze. The gun didn’t
waver. I screamed again, this time stepping to the side, circling him. The
slightest movement of his eyes, towards the door. Weakness! Uncertainty! I
sprang.
I think much of what let me tackle him was pure surprise.
You have to be an absolute nutcase to charge someone with a loaded gun, and
even more insane to do it if they look like they’re good with it, and he just
wasn’t expecting it. Before he could react I’d twined one of my legs around one
of his and bent it out from under him, exacerbating his fall. The gun went off
into the ceiling, and I was leaning with all my weight onto his throat. He
dropped the gun and pipe; one too long for quarters this close, the other too
tricky to aim nonlethally at the speed things were going, and closed his hands
around mine. It became a race to see who could strangle the other first, and
even though I had a head start it was extremely close. I was passing out and
little lights were popping everywhere by the time his eyes rolled back into his
head.
I stood up and nudged him a little, panting and wheezing
and clawing at my throat. When I’d recovered a bit more, I took a good run up and
kicked him in the ribs. No response. I immediately became bored with him and
looked for the door.
Between me and the door was yours Slenderly. I froze.
Looking back on it, because I sure wasn’t in any position
to be noticing things then, it was odd. There was… nothing. Not a sudden
awareness of his presence, the equivalent of a polite cough, not that emoticon
aura, no white noise, not even the waves of fear inducing power and wrongness
that usually come off him in waves. He was just a smug no faced bastard
businessman with tentacles, to my perception.
I growled at him. He simply tilted his head to the side.
I felt a surge of anger and my territory
mine mine MINE, and screamed. It sounded more like tortured metal than
anything else, strangulation having reduced my windpipe to the size of a straw,
but it got the message across or so I thought. Then I snatched up the steel pipe
and ran at him with it. Anyone who’s seen the Everyman HYBRID videos knows how
well that went. I woke up on a garage roof in the late afternoon. It had been
morning when I’d entered the warehouse.
My first thought was auuuuuugh
oh god how can this many nerve endings exist, only a lot less eloquent and
involving more expletives. I must have been left unconscious on the roof for
some time because my entire front was a glorious skin peeling sunburn and the
blood around my hands and mouth was crusted and flaking. I idly started to lick
it off before my second thought, which
was what the hell am I doing and why am I eating valuable samples, arrived
at the station. My third thought was I
hope no one’s seen me up here and called the police, I look like a psycho,
which was funny in hindsight. In a not that funny way.
It took me several tries at standing up, one puking my
guts out, and two close calls with the edge before I was safely on terra firma.
And that is why, ladies and gentlemen, I am lying on the couch slathered in
aloe vera and covered in every frozen item in the freezer, which currently only
contains my first sample of Proxy blood. Let’s tally the results, shall we?
Proxy 1, ‘Smugface’: Asphyxiation, sore ribs.
Proxy 2, ‘Bailey’: Facial lacerations, heavy bruising,
bleeding wrist, snapped Achilles, very broken nose, nnnnnot sure if I actually
managed to get any eyes out or not, there was a lot of blood.
Me, ‘Idiot’: Concussion, headache the size of a small
moon, a heavy dose of ‘why the hell did I do what I did last night’ only
without the pleasure of actually having been drunk beforehand, sunburn that
makes even a breeze agony, bruises absolutely everywhere, sore ribs, head
wound, sore jaw, busted throat that makes anything more than a croak or squeak
impossible at this stage good thing I
have no one to talk to, eh?, sore wrists, sore shoulder, coughing up blood.
Slender Man, ‘Bastard’: Absolutely zip.
So really, there’s only one winner here, and it is
definitively not me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I am going to take way more
ibuprofen than I should and try to get some sleep.
