Fracture

 I am not happy.

Very not happy. Enough to break radio silence just to say how I am as Not Amused as Queen Victoria.

I recently found out that Fracture had come into possession of Zero's sword. Naturally, I wanted to know why. For good or ill, it's a Runner item with a very long and storied history, and I didn't appreciate his magpie hands all over it. Konaa, I trusted to hold it, and hold it safely. Fracture, I distinctly do not.

I still had his number from the time I sent him attack drones. Seeing as I didn't want him noseying about my hideouts, I went into the Port Hills to call it. Back in WWII it was feared Japan would attack New Zealand shores, and bunkers were made to overlook the sea. Even with the one I was at now a grey concrete remnant, it had a fantastic view.

He appeared from nowhere behind me, as he does. I didn't bother with any preamble. I started yelling at him, what was he thinking, why did he think he had any right, etc etc. I believe the words 'cultural misappropriation' may have surfaced at some point.

You know the answer he gave me? His entire reason? That it was too dangerous for Runners to have, and that he was hiding it in a Loop to keep it safe. Like he was a dutiful mother taking a razorblade from a toddler. Like we were incapable of recognising and safely dealing with the danger ourselves. Like that was even his decision to make, or his right to carry out.

I counted to ten. Loops are not foolproof. They can decay and collapse. More importantly, they can be pierced, and not by Runners. I do not want this passing hands between proxies. If he wanted it out of the ability of anyone to misuse it, there were safer and far more effective ways to do this, and they should be done by Runners. I told him of one such method, which I won't detail here because I still want cause to use it.

"For now, you just need to trust that its where it needs to be."

"And I don't trust you, Fracture. Get off your high horse. It may work for your underlings, but I am not one, so don't think you can give me vague platitudes and think I'll walk away satisfied. The sword is not yours. I have a better claim to it than you do. And you are not listening."

"If you were listening you might have this half way figured out. I'm not on my high horse. I'm doing my job. This isn't a matter of claims. Your job, my furious little sword, is to find a way to stand and fight. My job is to keep everyone alive. Our titles are very different. The kind of claim yours gives you over the sword will bring ruin."

"My job? And who do you think you are, my employer? The lack of any sort of pay could have fooled me. And trust me, I am fully aware of what happened the last time a Sage held that sword. So I won't hold it. I can get another to dispose of it. But it's not for proxy hands either, Fracture. And however you're hovering on the brink of becoming a runner, you're not one."

"I can't be a runner. That'd be suicide."

I shrugged. "Your Boss isn't pleased with you. You can't be a proxy and do runner things. That's equally as suicidal. Tip one way or the other, why don't you. But we're straying from the point. The sword. Relinquish it. I get what you're doing, Fracture, I really do. But it's not for you to do."

"It's something I have to do. I wish you could see the world like I do. The seas of possibilities. But that's my burden and so is the sword. I'm sorry kiddo, I really am. I'll make it up to you... probably."

And then he was gone in an instant, as he does, the dick, and I was standing alone in windblown tussock.

"Idiot." I kicked one. "Make it up to me, pfeh."

He'd said he was a Guardian, and that was why. But he forgets; a title only has as much power as others give it. He may have named me a Sage, but it was the ratification of the epithet by the Runner community that has truly made me one. You're not a Guardian for us, Fracture. That's not your burden, or your task, and you are so, so arrogant if you don't realise this.

There's no way this can end well. Maybe I can't see "seas of possibility", but that's something I can.

  2. What the fuck. If that sword belongs to anyone, surely it belongs to, well, a runner? If he wants to help, why take our things? That just makes me sad and scared and a bit angry. So, please could you take this note...

    2. It doesn't belong with anyone. Its not like I'm running around trying use it to rally runners together so I can lead them off a cliff. I'm giving it its due respect and ensuring it won't hurt anyone.

      Delete
    3. While that would indeed be bad, you're not giving it due respect by up and deciding you should be the one to do that.

      Delete
    4. And why shouldn't it be me?

      Delete
    5. For the very simple reason that you're not a runner, you're a proxy. You work for a thing that doesn't have our best interests in mind. Taking the sword has effectively delivered it into it's hands.

Or are you telling me if it ordered you to give it to you you would refuse?

      Delete
    6. What would it even do with the sword?

      Delete
    7. I have no idea, he's your Boss.

What if he ordered you to kill people with it, then. Would you follow through?

      Delete
    8. That would be contrary to my standing orders.

    9. We're talking hypotheticals here. It's a new, overriding order. Would you?

    10. I would negotiate something else or work out a bet, like I always have. Hes not a monster. Hes just different... and eats people. Hes monster like... but like human like too. Just far more faceless and people eating.

    11. And if your attempt failed?

He does 'eat' people, Fracture. What's your bargaining chip to prevent him from doing so?

      Delete
    12. Not everyone can be saved. But at least where I am I can save someone.

      Delete
    13. And what's "saving" to you, Fracture?

      Delete
    14. To pull them from danger and send them forward into a better brighter and sunnier tomorrow.

      Delete
    15. Yeah, that's what you said before and my response is the same: strip out the vague waffling and leave behind what that really entails.

      Delete
    16. Well I pull them from the volcano and get them to class before the first peroid bell. What the fuck do you want from me? A five point plan?

Its situational. The only guarantees are: I help them not die, and then help them stay that way if they are injured or something. And when they find out I'm a proxy and spit in my fucking eye I move on. Because fuck you all.

Its not complicated. I save people. SAAAAVVVVVEEE people. Spelled S-A-V-E. They don't die. They get tired of me. They move on.

No problem. The decision to take the vaccine or not is fully yours.

It doesn't seem talking is an option. Fracture is a stubborn bastard. Something else will have to be done.

    2. Edward, you are a shining fucking example of why a runner shouldn't have the fucking sword. If I'm gonna take shit from anyone on this matter it sure as hell won't be you.

      Delete
    3. Don't tar with the same brush, Fracture. While *he* is not an ideal candidate, that does not mean all runners are.

      Delete
    4. And what would ANY other runner do with it? Why would any other runner want it? I wouldn't trust Nazis with a genocide button and I won't trust a runner with this sword. Sorry if that's disrespectful. Unfortunately, its also practical.

      Delete
    5. You haven't given me any reasonable reason to trust proxies with it either, Fracture. It is indeed disrespectful, but it's practicality is also in doubt.

      Delete
    6. I don't care if you trust proxies. I just need you to trust me.

However, back to the point. I would not suggest getting to worried about it, he has it, there's nothing else you can do.

How's the search going, if no secret?

    1. Even a genius can blind themselves to the possibility of their failure, so confident in their own mental acuity they believe they cannot experience it. I have some experience in this.

Ultimately, this is not about whether Fracture is really able to guard it, which I have doubts about, or whether he's right about it being a danger to Runners, which is correct, but rather about his sheer full of himselfness in assuming it's his decision to make and take.

There is by no means *nothing* else I can do.

The search is going... poorly. None of the local proxies seem to know Black's location. That said, I have been unable to catch Smugface as of yet.

    16. To say we have as much authority as we can take, is to tacitly encourage anyone who wants that sword to take it. It wouldn't have to be a runner, and it wouldn't be by direct means either. It could just be a Timberwolf approaching you and saying "hey Fracture, I hacked your iCloud; give me that sword or I'll leak all of your nude pics."

And look at me dealing with it.

We were going to notice eventually, and now we have, so why don't you take a second and analyze the statement, "I, the proxy who works for the monster hellbent on killing you, am taking this weapon you made to defend yourselves with, because you can't handle it, and it's safer this way."

      BULL. FUCKING. SHIT.

    7. Unless you have some way of proving that, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and NOT take you at your word.

      Delete
    8. History is all I have to say. Its happened before, it'll happen again, and Edward is proof that if it was left amongst you, it'd be happening again.

      Delete
    9. Edward is ours to handle. Rest assured we don't like the idea of him with it as much as you do. The idea of you with it is equally as unappealing.

History says that one person attempting to make decisions for the entire runner community without their consent does not get a happy ending.

      Delete
    10. Then the solution is simple... we destroy the sword, or at least dispose of it somehow. Obviously, none of us have any right to carry it at this moment, you need proof? Read these comments again.

Why don't we throw it into the ocean somewhere random? That way, if it comes back, we'll know that it was for a reason.

Fracture, you claim to want to help. Do so. Hiding the fact that you were holding item of significant importance to Runners was not a good idea and does not help.

      Delete
    11. I know a better place than the ocean to throw it. Objects on the sea floor can be recoverable with modern methods. Objects lost to the depths of the area I have in mind cannot.

      Delete
    12. what's to stop us just melting it down or otherwise destroying it? I'm not exactly a scholar of core theory, but isn't it just a regular metal sword/knife?

      Delete
    13. I think we've made our points that Edward nor Fracture should have the sword. We'd save time if we just nominated people we would trust with the sword. Could be one person, or multiple people who can get together and protect it.

      Delete
    14. We could also nominate active volcanoes you trust with the sword.

Only runners get to vote on it though.

      Delete
    15. I'm not sure I'd agree with that idea, no offense, but people can change. Drastically. I'm a prime example of that, so is Banks (sorry to drag you in, but you are a good example).

I still think it would be best to dispose of it without destroying it: the ocean analogy would work in many different places. That way, if it turns up in someone's care that means they deserve it and can probably handle it.

And Lovett, I don't believe that it had anything special about it. Just like another Runner artifact: the bone. It's not that the object itself is special, it's the belief behind it. The beliefs have tainted the object somehow. That's my theory.

      Delete
    16. Then does it matter that it was Zeroes sword? Or that people think it was Zero's sword?

      Delete
    17. In a way, yes. People will kill for it. They'll fight each other for it. Instead of focusing on their true enemies, they'll turn on their friends. All because of old beliefs that, if true, would have ended all of this long ago.

      Delete
    18. If it truly doesn't matter, then destroy it. To drop it in the ocean and make a reversible decision about it implies it's both dangerous and important, and that's probably the worst way to frame it.

      Delete
    19. It is dangerous. But not because of any merit on it's part.

      Delete
    20. I thought you wanted a guardian for it? If we decide to go that route (might as well discuss all possibilities), we should choose someone with a strong moral code and nothing to lose. That way, they won't go off on some delusional quest of vengeance. They also shouldn't be expected to die within the next few years to keep it safe.

Ultimately, though, we don't have the sword; Fracture does.

      Delete
    21. All I know is, you can't just throw it in the ocean and hope the right person gets hold of it.

      Delete
    22. Maybe, maybe not. It is pointless to argue on it while we are unable to do anything. Any chance Fracture will willingly hand it over?

      Delete
    23. Not a chance. It will have to be taken from him.

If we're talking volcanoes, I vote Kilueia

If we're talking people, I nominate Sanna. She's levelheaded enough that I think she'd be able to not do anything rash with the sword.

      Delete
    24. That's a shame.

I'd agree with that. But I wish I didn't. It would make her a target to more people. Some Runners who are insane.

      Delete
    25. why not make a bunch of replicas of the sword, distribute them? Means nobody has to know where the sword is, and chances are we'll have a warning when people with replicas start getting robved or killed.

    26. How about we compromise with Fracture by giving a runner of our choice the sword, taking precautions approved by us and Fracture, and then Fracture can visit the sword as much as he likes...?

    4. well then, i know the fact that you people don't trust me with the sword, so why trust me at all, if as miss Annalee said "batshit insane"?

i know that i shouldn't be in possession of the sages sword, thats why i nominate med to hold it because then there would be someone level-headed.

  13. Hey, look. I'm actually useful for something. Isn't that nice.

  14. I believe that the community has to some degree validated his self imposed title by giving him the authority to name people like you sages. I never expected to see those titles getting revived, it's truly fascinating to witness.

    1. To some degree is the important part, there. Not to this degree.

    2. I believe the sword was given willingly, which makes it his to do with as he likes. It is interesting that despite the blurring of roles, there is still such a rigid divide between those you call runners and those you call proxies.

    3. There is a rigid divide, for them. I can see in colors.

    4. This is why you interest me. The more your culture grows, the blurrier the lines get. No other culture of fear can say the same.

    5. Hhhh. While the lines are indeed blurred, especially morally, when it comes right down to it the question is "Do you defy the thing, to the best of your ability" and "Do you willingly serve it, however coerced?" While there's wiggle room there, it has allowed disparate cultures to develop.

    6. But lately, as Fracture has exemplified, the ones that serve are often also defying the faceless one. There are many cases, most of which seem to tie back to the truly fascinating 'free market' he has created.

    7. The divide between proxy and runner is irrelevant. Its the least important piece on the table. I am person with good intentions doing good things, helping people, fighting off threats to my friends and even strangers, and trying to keep myself and my friends alive. What I am is the least interesting part of me.

To call me a proxy does not do me justice. To call you a runner do you justice. I am the guardian, founder of the free market, and the self important child. You are the sage, an important and intelligent figure head leading runners through a show of motivation, and an angry judgmental classist bitch.

    8. Affairs among those chosen by the Faceless One are endlessly contradictory. Med, you claim you do not trust him because he serves. I would point out that if you trusted him enough to call him up and berate his decision knowing that he would show up, then you trust him more than you think. You went to speak to him with no backup and no precautions taken other than not leading him to where you live. Perhaps you share more trust than you think.

And Fracture, you claim the divide means nothing while clinging so tightly to your side of it,. These titles you continue to use were created by a narcissistic madman to ally people against your cause, and yet you revived them to aid those you have sworn to fight. Which is what you seem to be really wanting to do, despite having only recently branched out into killing for your 'Father' yourself.

The contradictions are myriad and fascinating.

    9. I am sworn to fight no one. These titles are a symbol of community and hope. To be apart of something greater than my own life and resist a bleak empty existence trapped in my life until the inevitable hits.

The only contradictions here are in our perceptions of what I'm supposed to be and I will not let you dictate what it means to be me.

    10. I do not wish to dictate anything. I merely wish to observe and perhaps question a little. When one asks questions, one may gather a better understanding of the world.

    11. It's not that I don't trust him. I've trusted him with quite a few things. It's that I don't trust him with *this*, because for all his Runnerlike tendencies, he is clinging on to an affiliation that should not be allowed the sword.

      Delete
    12. There's no clinging. I'm a proxy and nothing is gonna change that.

    13. I feel obligated to point out that the man who made it famous is also now infamous for killing runners. Perhaps a man who has attempted to make it law not to do so is not such a bad choice to keep it.

      Delete
    14. Attempted is the key word there. And Fracture, while he has not directly killed anyone as he proudly states, is indirectly responsible for many deaths.

But that's neither here nor there. The key problem is affiliation.

  16. Nobody should get the sword. It shouldn't be destroyed either. Zero left it behind for a reason. We should do the same. Maybe we'll need it in the future. Maybe we won't. But I don't see anyone here worthy to keep it. Zero's dead. Konaa is out. Just take it back to that forest and stick it back in the ground.

That sword killed Slice. That sword killed Amelia. How many more deaths does there need to be before we abandon it? I would have trusted Konaa with it. Konaa, for all his flaws, was no killer. He never would have become a killer.

How many people here can say the same?

  17. That sword...such a pretty piece of art, isn't it?
